Giloy plant is an Ayurvedic medicinal plant that has been used extensively in Indian medicine for ages. Giloy or Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia Miers.) is a rejuvenating herb for the body. The plant is also known as Gilo, Guduchi (Hindi), Amrita (Sanskrit) and has other names which vary in accordance with the location. It is an herbaceous vine of the family Neisseriaceae native to the tropical areas of India, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka. Giloy is found particularly in tropical regions of India.


A large extensively spread glabrous, perennial deciduous twiner with succulent stems and papery bark; leaves are simple and commonly 7 to 9 nerved.

The flowers are yellow with a tint of green and the they are unisexual. The surface of the stems is closely studded with warty tubercles and the surface skin is longitudinally cracked. On the removal of the surface skin, the dark greenish stem can be seen. 

Fruits are orangish in color and can be found in clusters of 1 to 3.


According to a recent experiment, analysis and findings, the report clearly indicates that 29 endophytes were present in the collected samples of Tinospora cordifolia which is linked to different taxa. According to the conclusion of a study, this plant is capable of destroying effects caused by Oriental leafworm moth, a polyphagous pest which scientifically termed as Cpodoptera Litura.
